Military knitting charities are some of my favorites to support. It’s a wonderful feeling to know you are contributing to both the physical and emotional well-being of the overseas troops who do so much to help people like you and me, people they don’t know. Isn’t it worthwhile to do the same for them? What follows is a listing of some of the wonderful charities that offer support for our overseas troops. Most of these charities benefit from your knitting needles, but one very special (and long-running) organization doesn’t require any knitting at all.
Help Our Troops
The Ships Project: This organization sends hats, slippers, and Cool-Ties to overseas troops. Socks for Soldiers: Just as it says, this group knits socks for troops. If you love to knit socks, this is a great charity for you to support. Operation Toasty Toes: A charity originally designed to send slippers to troops, they now also send headbands, dickeys, knit helmets, caps, and wristlets. AnySoldier.com: If you occasionally need a break from knitting (I know, I know, but it does happen sometimes!) but would still like to help, this is a great organization to consider. This wonderful program arranges for soldiers who normally do not receive any mail to receive letters and care packages. The most highly-prized item you can send to one of these soldiers is a simple letter. That’s why we highly recommend this effort if you would like to take a break from knitting. A letter of encouragement and support is often more than any of these troops have received, and it will be greatly appreciated. You’ll find links to similar programs for other branches at the military, too, near the top of the home page. With these fine charities and programs, you can support our troops, either through military knitting or letters of encouragement!
