If your heart aches for Syrian refugees, let Hats for War-Torn Syria carry your charity knitting to where it is most needed
Given the ongoing fighting in Syria and the thousands of refugees flooding the surrounding nations, this is a crucial time for charity knitting for Syrian refugees. Recently we introduced our readers to Lily – Love in the Language of Yarn, operating out of Turkey.
Today, we would like to tell you about Hats and More for War-Torn Syria. This group operates out of Jordan and is sponsored by Save the Children through an organization called Studio Syria. This organization offers art and educational opportunities to Syrian refugees living in Jordan.
Three ladies named Laurie, Jean, and Virginia work to gather hats (they now take other clothing as well, including sweaters, socks, blankets, quilts, vests, and mittens) that are knitted, crocheted, or sewn together and then send them to Jordan, where they are greatly appreciated by Syrian children. Although Jordan is a desert country, at night it can get extremely cold, and it even often receives snow during winter.
The group now also works in concert with Friends of Salaam Cultural Museum Helping Syrian Refugees in Seattle, Washington. This means that if you live in the United States, you’ll have a much closer base to which to send anything you make!
How You Can Help
Make anything that will help keep folks warm during cold months! If you love to knit and/or crochet and/or sew, Studio Syria will be delighted to accept whatever you can send. They’ll even take new store-bought items, so if you have friends who don’t do any sort of crafting, they can still get involved. Which leads us to…
Spread the word! There are so many young people that need warmth. Not only will your donations help keep a child warm, but you can also boost the morale of little lives who have witnessed many horrors and have lost almost everything. Children in desperate situations really need to know they are loved and cared for.
If you’re ready to jump in and help (and I know you are!), all the information you need is available on both the Facebook page and the Ravelry Group page for Hats and More for War-Torn Syria. Information includes guidelines for hats and shipping addresses.
If your heart aches for these innocent Syrian refugee children, this is the perfect opportunity to touch and improve lives through charity knitting!
