Knitting for this charity can help orphans in a very cold and needy location
Walking with Orphans (formerly the Eastern European Russian Orphanages Project) started life as a knitting charity formed via Ravelry in 2010. Now, it continues to send hand-knitted items to orphans living in the coldest and most destitute areas of Eastern Europe and Russia, but it now accepts items made from other crafting efforts. The group is also working on connections to help facilitate adoptions and provide counseling to adoptive families and children.
Among the nations Walking with Orphans offers items to are Russia, Kazakhstan, Bulgaria, Romania, Georgia, Ukraine, and Moldova.
The items they accept and ship include the following:
-Clothing and accessories for children and teens
-Clothing and accessories for infants
In addition to these handmade items, they will also take personal hygiene items, first aid supplies (band-aids, antibiotic ointment, iodine), arts and crafts supplies, school supplies, and bedding.
How You Can Help
There are many ways to benefit this wonderful knitting charity. First, of course, you can knit clothing for babies, children, and teenagers. (Teenagers, in particular, are so often overlooked in charity efforts.)
You can also donate other items that are needed. One important way you can help, if you are able, is to contribute financially. Walking with Orphans is based in the United States and ships items overseas; as you can imagine, the largest items can be very costly to ship. Even offering donations to cover shipping of the items you knit, as much as you are able, can be a big help.
Visit Walking with Orphan’s website to learn more about how you can donate to this very worthy charity.
Orphanages in this part of the world often struggle financially, which means that the ones who live there can face great hardships indeed, especially when winters are so brutal. Contributing to this great knitting charity will help some of the world’s most vulnerable citizens in both tangible and emotional ways.
