Linking grassroots charity projects with charity knitters and crocheters is the Yarnheads Project’s way
I can’t believe I hadn’t heard about the Yarnheads Project before. But now you can hear all about them! This is an unusual group in that their primary mission is to match eager charity knitters and crocheters with charities that can use their help.
The Yarnheads Project is the brainchild of avid crafter Claire. She herself has a chronic illness called dysautonomia which keeps her often at home (and sometimes stuck in bed as well). Without the ability to work outside her home, she looked for a way to contribute to her own livelihood along with helping the less fortunate. She learned an assortment of crafts including crochet, jewelry-making, and woodworking. She also, as she says on her website, had the following thought after meeting a woman who made dolls for orphans in Bali: “if 10,000 people will come to my blog in a day for a free pattern, maybe a few would like to put hats on the homeless and babies.”
Since 2013 her solution has been the Yarnheads Project. Her mission is to link grassroots charity knitting projects (in addition to hosting a few initiatives of her own) to those with a great desire to help in yarn-y ways, either by knitting or crocheting for these causes or by donating yarn.
Claire is constantly on the lookout for more charities (preferably local, grassroots campaigns) that need help, and of course she’s always on the lookout for more Yarnheads — i.e., knitters and crocheters willing to either commit to knitting one project for one charity, or folks willing to sponsor another yarncrafter by donating yarn, a gift card for yarn, or a knitting/crochet pattern.
How You Can Help
The Yarnheads Project has many ways you can help! First, of course, you can help by knitting or crocheting! If you’d like to become an official Yarnhead, Claire asks that you commit to just one project for one charity. (Of course, if you want to create more, you’re welcome to!) To register as a Yarnhead, just fill out the simple registration form on this page.
You can also sponsor another by donating yarn. If you have way too much yarn or know someone else who has yarn that you (or they) want to go to someone who will use it for others, visit this page for guidelines and an e-mail address so that you can submit your request.
Want to contribute financially? Purchase a gift card for a craft store that sells yarn and donate it to the Yarnheads Project. You’ll need the same e-mail address that those who wish to donate yarn use.
If you’re a knitting or crochet designer, or you enjoy creating tutorials, and would like to offer yours to the Yarnheads Project, you can visit this page and fill out the form.
One really important potential contribution is submitting charities. If you know of or are part of a knitting/crochet charity or initiative of some sort and could use some more crafters to join your cause, Claire and her project need you! Visit this page and submit the organization/recipient that needs help. This is an extremely important part of the Yarnheads Project, so be on the lookout for organizations you can submit!
This is a terrific project with a lot of potential to spread knitted and crocheted goodwill, warmth, and comfort all over the United States. Why not find a way to contribute?
