Why Finger Knitting is Fantastic for Kids

If your kids get bored this winter season, why not give finger knitting a try?

If your kids are too young (or too impatient) for knitting with needles, why not give finger knitting a try? It's a great way to introduce them to the craft without getting too complicated, and it's a perfect answer to the inevitable cry of "I'M BORED!" you get halfway through spending the winter months indoors.

Why Knit?

In addition to being fun, finger knitting is a fantastic learning opportunity for your children. When they knit, whether with their fingers or regular needles, kids are learning:

-- to practice their creativity
-- a connection to their history
-- finger dexterity
-- eye-hand coordination
-- math skills (counting stitches, etc.)

With all of that going on, it's a wonder that finger knitting isn't a mandatory subject in elementary schools.

Getting Started

You can find instructions on finger knitting, but once you've mastered these basics, the kids might start wondering what they should do with all those skills. No problem! Here are some ideas to get them started.

1. Make jewelry

Finger knitted strands make fantastic "necklaces" not only for little girls, but for their toys. String a few together and you have a unisex wristband or bracelet instead.

2. A leash

If you have a small pet, you can finger knit a handmade leash for your baby (the pet, that is). I wouldn't suggest using a finger knit leash on your Bull Mastiff, however! If you have cats who love to get into your yarn, you've probably already thought of knitting them a few toys, too. Stuff the strand with catnip for an extra treat and help your kids sew the ends together.

3. Belts and headbands

It's self explanatory, really, but kids love to wear thing they make themselves. Belts and headbands are quick and easy to make and the kids will feel like real fashion plates after finger knitting their own accessories.

4. Toy accessories

Reins for toy horses, lining for the dollhouse floor -- you know what? Your kids can probably come up with far better ideas than I have here.

With all these ideas, you're probably itching to get started. So if you find your kids getting bored on a snowy weekend afternoon, never fear. Pull out the yarn and start a finger knitting circle.
