Try These Fun Ways to Learn New Knitting Stitches

Want to learn new knitting stitches? Try these fun ideas.

When you first learn to knit, the only knitting stitches you know are often knit and purl. Of course, there's nothing wrong with this, but if you only stick with these stitches, your knitting will soon become boring. One way to keep from getting bored is to learn new stitches. Here are some fun ways to do just that.

Start a Club

Don't let the sound of starting a club intimidate you. There's really nothing to it and it's fun and easy. Get together a group of friends that want to learn more about knitting. Decide whether you'll meet once weekly or monthly.

Before each meeting, choose one or two new stitches to learn. Either you can teach the group or you can make it more interesting and have group members teach. It's fun to have members take turns teaching their favorite stitch.

Keep the meeting light, casual and fun. Choose a variety of stitches. A good suggestion is to choose one simple stitch and one stitch that is more challenging for each meeting.

Each meeting, have some patterns ready that use the newly learned stitches. You can find plenty of free knitting patterns online. Print them off and the group members will be ready to try out their new stitches.

Video Group

If you have a group of beginners, watch knitting videos. Ahead of time, choose one stitch to feature. Find a good video on sites like Wonder How or You Tube. Watch the video together, help each other learn it and practice. By watching the videos together, what is confusing to one person won't be to the next. Learning in a group is often much easier than trying to learn something by yourself.

Stitch Library

For more experienced knitters, you can form a group with the purpose of putting together stitch libraries. Each week or month, the group gets together, knits swatches with new stitches and catalogs it into their own knitting stitch library. A stitch library is something every knitter should have but most don't get around to it. Working on a library together takes the boredom out of the project and everyone leaves with their own set of swatches.

There are many fun ways to learn new stitches. Use these ideas as a starting point and brainstorm what works for you and your friends. Whatever you choose is up to you, just make sure you keep learning new knitting stitches so it doesn't become a chore to you.
