The Ripple Effect of Knitting Charities

Never underestimate the ability of knitting charities to make a difference

You never know what you'll start when you knit for charity. Judy Yoskosky certainly didn't. You see, Judy believes in giving back. But don't think for a moment that she's all talk and no action -- not so. Judy feels that everyone needs to share their talents with other people. Learn how Judy's generosity gave birth to knitting charities that keep on giving.

The Ripple Effect

Judy loves the library and is a longtime board member of the Rostraver Public Library in Pittsburgh. She also loves to knit and decided to combine these two loves. Because Judy is so active in the library and loves knitting, she felt she should combine the two by teaching classes there.

In a short period of time, Judy's knitting group quickly grew to 25 members and everyone is having a great time learning to knit. They are also learning to follow in Judy's footsteps by giving back.

One member's granddaughter was in the neonatal intensive care unit. This prompted the group to knit preemie caps and small blankets to keep the light out of the isolettes.

Another group member is a nurse at the local hospital. This member says she sees adults and children coming into the hospital wrapped in dirty towels and rags. She knew giving these people something pretty and new would make them feel better.

Not only is the local hospital the lucky recipient of this group's knitting efforts, but also the area nursing home and the Connellsville Area Community Ministries. The nursing home residents gladly receive knitted lap robes and shawls and the expectant mothers at the ministries program receive baby layettes.

Judy simply did what came natural to her -- she shared her skill and knitting talent to help others. In turn, those she's helping are helping even more people. Never underestimate the ripple effect of knitting charities.

Knitting for charities might appear simple on the surface, but take a closer look. You'll see the kindness and love rippling outward the touching the lives of many.

Why don't you start your own ripple effect? Get together with a few fellow knitters. Begin meeting regularly. Choose a name for your group and a charity that needs your help. With a little free advertising from local radio stations, flyers, emails, and word of mouth, you'll be amazed at how quickly your group will grow. You'll also be surprised at the amount of good that comes about when you knit for charity.
