The Humble Stitch Project Warms Hundreds of Homeless
Help The Humble Stitch Project spread warmth across the nation
The Humble Stitch Project is another wonderful grassroots knitting charity. Its members are everyday people with families, day jobs, and obligations who nonetheless make time for charity knitting because they know how much a humble stitch matters.
Like so many amazing charity knit groups, The Humble Stitch Project isn't content to sit still, but insists on surging forward. Last year they helped 233 homeless people not only to stay warm, but to feel the warmth of a caring hand. This year, they hope to more than double that number and help over 500 people.
Charity knitting at its finest
On the surface, The Humble Stitch Project is much like many other charity knitting groups (not that that's a bad thing, since pretty much every charity knit group I know is amazing). However, they do have a few creative touches that set them apart. I love how their website matches those willing to provide knitting lessons with people wanting to learn. What a great way to get people knitting. If you're in their area, this is one opportunity I'd sign up for in a heartbeat.
The other thing that really caught my attention about this group? Their enthusiasm! Even by reading the website, you get the impression that this is a group of intelligent, dedicated charity knitters who aren't going to let anything stand in their way. It's one of those charities that doesn't just do good works: its members seem like they'd be great people to get to know.
Get Knitting One Stitch At a Time
As of right now, there are only a few months left before the project due date (although, since The Humble Stitch Project shows no signs of slowing or stopping, chances are that if you miss this year's deadline, you can always get working for next year!). So if you want to help them reach that magic 500, it's time to start knitting.
The Humble Stitch Project is willing to accept pretty much any cold weather clothing items, but they do prefer adult sizes in dark colors, since many of the recipients are men. Focus on hats, gloves, scarves, and mitts: sweaters and afghans are nice, but this charity knitting group wants to reach as many people as possible, so they look for smaller items.
The group also offers many other ways to help. Check out their fantastically informative and interesting website at The Humble Stitch. It has everything from patterns to FAQs to links, so you'll never be with a question unanswered.
