Reasons for Charity Knitting
Rekindle your love of charity knitting!
I think it's obvious that I love charity knitting. Sometimes, though, I get caught up in my own projects, and then weeks or even months go by when I don't do any knitting for charity. That's ok: I've always believed that knitting for charity should be fun, not an obligation, so I don't get on my case when I'm not into projects.
Once I start charity knitting again, though, something funny happens. Sometimes it takes me a while to convince myself to get started again -- like I have some sort of innate resistance to helping others! It's like an exercise program you resist starting, but once you do, it makes you feel so good you don't know why you delayed. The same thing happens with knitting.
I absolutely love charity knitting, so here -- for me as much as you! -- are my reasons to charity knit.
The best reasons to charity knit
1. That warm and fuzzy feeling
We have so much -- it's really amazing to help someone else and know that they'll have a better life because of you. Of course, you could get that same feeling with a financial donation, which brings me to...
2. The personal touch
I absolutely love the thought that someone will get a warm, handknit blanket, sweater, hat, or scarf. I think the fact that someone actually took the time to make something for you, rather than buying a scarf at the discount store and dropping it in a donation bin, can't help but make people feel special.
3. Trying out new patterns
Knitting for charity gives you a great way to find and try free knitting patterns. You can experiment as much as you like without worrying about your husband hating the results, and you can have fun exploring new things. Since most charities offer free knitting patterns you also have the chance to expand your knitting horizons.
4. Meeting other knitters
When you work with knitting charities, you meet knitters -- that's just a given. And sometimes, you wind up with lifelong friendships. The people you meet through knitting charities have the same interests and goals as you, so you have an automatic common ground to start from.
5. Waste not, want not!
I absolutely HATE throwing away old scraps of yarn. Fortunately, I can always turn them into a blanket square, pair of socks, or baby cap when I charity knit. You get a great way to use up old yarn, help other people, and make the world a better place -- what more could you ask for?
If you've never charity knit before, now's a great time to start -- and if you used to charity knit but you haven't in a while, I hope I've reminded you why you loved it in the first place. Charity knitting isn't just a hobby -- it's a way of life, and it's one I love living.
