Project H.A.N.D.S. Builds Friendships and Helps Those in Need

Project H.A.N.D.S. links the elderly and the very young, providing homeless children with knitted items.

Project H.A.N.D.S is the brainchild of residents from the Retirement Housing Foundation, who wanted a way to give back to the community. Their initial efforts have expanded, and they now provide homeless children everywhere with hats, scarves, and toys.

A Helping Hand

Project H.A.N.D.S. (Helping Angels National Donated Support) started with a handful of residents from the Retirement Housing Foundation. The RTF provides homes and housing for elderly people who can't afford much, and several of the residents wanted a way to give back to the community. Many of them are in poor health or don't feel strong enough to actively volunteer in the community, so they conceived Project H.A.N.D.S!

But Project H.A.N.D.S. doesn't just consist of RTF residents anymore! As news of their good work spread, more and more people wanted to help out, and now the original RTF group coordinates donations from churches, girl scouts, knitting guilds, and many others, making sure that as many homeless children as possible receive the gift of warmth!

Forging Bridges Across Generations

Project H.A.N.D.S. is mainly about connecting people. The elderly ladies who knit toys, scarves, hats, and sweaters for homeless children know that their work is benefiting a child in need. When the donations pour in, they have the added satisfaction of seeing how their initial idea has spread across the nation.

When you donate your time or money to Project H.A.N.D.S., you aren't just helping a homeless child. You're lending your support to elderly women who aren't content to fade away! The real joy of Project H.A.N.D.S. lies in women of different generations tied together by two things: a love of knitting and a burning desire to lend a hand!

Reaching Out

There are many ways to get involved with Project H.A.N.D.S.! The obvious one is knitting: Project H.A.N.D.S. accepts donations of any knitted item that might benefit a homeless child. There are many different RTF centers, and they all coordinate Project H.A.N.D.S. in different ways, so your best bet is to check the Project H.A.N.D.S. website for a center near you. Project H.A.N.D.S. also accepts donations of yarn, fabric, and money.
