Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep is a nonprofit organization in Colorado that provides “remembrance photography.” It is a sad fact of life that sometimes, babies die shortly after they are born. Even more unfortunate is that too many times, the families of these babies have nothing to remember them by.
When others die, there are photos, belongings, and memories made. When a newborn dies, there is almost nothing. It’s one of the most tragic aspects of an infant death.
This is where Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep (or NILMDTS) comes in. This organization offers high-quality photography services. Not only are parents given the opportunity to say goodbye to their babies, but they are able to have photos taken with their babies before that final goodbye.
Heartbreaking as it is for such a service to be necessary, NILMDTS provides families a valuable service that they simply might not receive otherwise.
In addition to remembrance photography, NILMDTS offers Remembrance Care Packages and an annual Remembrance Walk. The latter is an opportunity for those who have lost babies to get together and walk a distance to honor those they have lost. It’s a powerful reminder that they are not alone, that others know what they have experienced.
The former is a box designed to help preserve the memory of the lost infant. Some of the items included in Care Packages include a journal, a resource book, a teddy bear, a lock of hair, “mother and baby” bracelet set, NILMDTS keychain for father, and so on.
How You Can Help
I hope none of you have ever experienced the loss of an infant. But I know it’s far more likely that many of you either have or know someone who has. So this is likely to be a cause that touches your heart.
If this is the case, how can you help? One of the items included in the Remembrance Care Package is a blanket and hat set. NILMDTS needs the help of knitters and crocheters who can make these blankets. (Currently, the organization has a high volume of hats and asks that no more be sent for now. Should they need more again, they will put the word out on their website.)
Be sure to check out the guidelines for these blankets. They need to be a certain size and fit within a particular range of colors. They also request a certain weight of yarn.
When you have finished blankets, visit this page. Donors are asked to fill out and submit a form before you ship your donation. The address to which the donation is shipped is found here as well.
If you live in Colorado, or if you are simply touched by this organization’s mission, I hope you’ll consider taking your charity knitting to Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep.
