Making Things Better for Our Soldiers One Knitted Afghan at a Time
Two sisters, along with fellow knitters, show appreciation for those that serve our country
Since practically the beginning of civilization, every day thousands of men and women put themselves in the honorable profession of protecting the rights of each and every one of us. Many have lost their lives in the process; many are faced with a future of hardship, injury and emotional trauma. It is important for us to remember and share our thanks.
2 Sisters for Soldiers, has found a way for us to show our gratitude and respect for the fine individuals who risk everything on our behalf.
Knitted afghans go to soldiers in medical centers
At the Walter Reed Medical Center, over 350 knitted or crocheted afghans or lap-ghans have been delivered. The medical center is the United States Army's flagship medical center. Located on 113 acres in Washington, D.C., it serves more than 150,000 active and retired personnel from all branches of the military. Since its origins, what is now the WRAMC medical care facility has grown from a bed capacity of 80 patients to approximately 5,500 rooms covering more than 28 acres of floor space. The medical center continues to grow every year.
Soon the sisters hope to be able to start delivering blankets to VA retirement homes. There are 133 State Veterans Homes in America currently serving a total population of 30,255 residents. What an amazing accomplishment for the knitting community if we could present each and every resident with a token of our appreciation.
If you have a passion for knitting and an appreciation of the dedication and service from the fine men and women in the armed forces, pull out your favorite pattern and your favorite yarn and get started on something that will really make a difference in the life of a soldier by showing them how appreciated they are.
Because of the emotional and traumatic nature of many of the patients at Walter Reed Medical Center, visitors are carefully screened before being allowed to enter. By sending your finished afghans or lap-ghans to 2 Sisters for Soldiers you can be assured your gift of love, respect and thanks will be delivered to the soldiers.
Let's do our part to make this one of the biggest charitable events in the history of charitable events.
