Make an Impact -- Knit for Charity

Never underestimate the good you can do when you knit for charity

You just never know the impact you may have when you knit for charity. At first glance, it's only a chemo cap...it's only a blanket...it's only a pair of mittens. But, for the fortunate recipients you donate your time, materials, and love to, it's much, much more.

Make an Impact -- Knit for Charity

'It has been the high point every week; something to look forward to everyday. Cancer is secondary to knitting." ~ Cancer caregiver

"Knitting is great for focusing. It allows you to be creative and accomplish something even when you're not feeling well or when you don't have a lot of energy." ~ Breast cancer survivor

How could you have known? Chances are -- you didn't. You hope when you join knitting charities that you are helping people who truly need the assistance. You hope when knitting for charity, you've added comfort and love to someone's life, but you never really know, do you?

The testimonials above are just a couple from a charity know as Knit for Life. This charity like many others has profound effects on those in need.

Knit for Life

The Knit for Life knitting charity began back in 1997 in Seattle, Washington. Founded by cancer survivor Tanya Parieaux, their work is expanding to other cities, hospitals, and inpatient settings. After experiencing cancer first hand, Tanya realized the importance knitting for charity plays during the healing process.

The program is a network of volunteers who use the healing experience of knitting to enhance the lives of cancer patients and their caregivers. While learning to knit or learning advanced knitting techniques, the patients escape isolation as they learn together.

Both the patients and the caregivers have the opportunity to learn a new skill that relieves stress, takes their mind off their illness, and allows them the opportunity to share their experiences and concerns surrounding their illness. The setting provides them the chance to learn about the cancer process in helpful and supportive ways that encourage them with decision-making and self-advocacy.

The mission statement of Knit for Life sums up their philosophy well

To support and enhance the lives of cancer patients and their caregivers while going through the process of treatment and recovery by the gentle and healing experience of knitting.

If you would like to support Knit for Life, you can do so in one of three ways.

1. Begin a Knit for Life inpatient or outpatient program in your community.
