Lend a Hand With Free Easy Knitting Patterns!
Even beginning knitters can knit for charity with free easy knitting patterns!
If you're just learning to knit and want free easy knitting patterns for charity, this scarf is the perfect way to go. It's one of many free easy knitting patterns available online for either your own amusement or charitable knitting!
Most free easy knitting patterns fall into two categories: scarves and washcloths. That's because those are the easiest things to make when you're just starting out! And if you need them, that'll work perfectly for you. But even if you're up to your ears in scarves and washcloths, you can practice knitting while making something special for someone in need.
Knit One, Purl One
Most free easy knitting patterns use only one or two stitches. The first is the knit stitch, which you probably know already: insert the needle through the stitch, wrap the yarn around it from behind, pull it back through, and slide the first stitch off the left needle. The other stitch you need to know is the purl stitch. Fortunately, purling is simplicity itself! It's basically a knit stitch in reverse. You start as though you're about to knit and bring the tail of the yarn to the front of your work. If you're in the middle of a row, that means you pull it right through between the right and left needles. Once the yarn is in place, stick your right needle through the left stitch from the bottom right to the front. Wrap the yarn around the needle and pull it back through the stitch, slip the left hand stitch off, and you've made a purl stitch!
The Scarf
The best thing about free easy knitting patterns is that you don't have to mess around with gauge and yarn types, and this one is no exception. Pick any nice, soft, thick yarn you like and work the scarf until it's long enough to be, well, a scarf!
Cast on 26 stitches on size 8 needles. We're going to work this scarf in a box stitch, which looks like this:
Row 1: K2, P2, all the way across
Row 2: P2, K2, all the way across
Keep working this way throughout the entire scarf, beginning with two knit stitches on odd numbered rows and two purl stitches on even number rows. If you leave a tail when you cast on, it'll be a helpful reminder what row you're on: whenever the tail is on you're right, it's an even (or purl) row.
When the scarf reaches a scarf-like length, cast off. There you have it! A beautiful scarf, one of many free easy knitting patterns you can use to benefit those in need!
