If you're like me, your late-night noshing is more a product of boredom than hunger anyway. If I could keep my hands busy and focused, I'd probably finally lose those last five pounds.
Yummy Knitted Desserts
Perhaps it's this connection between knitting and eating that leads so many knitters to create beautiful, nearly edible food out of yarn. Or perhaps, as with other noted knit for fun projects, knitted food is all about the sheer joy of creation and the smiles it brings to others. Whatever the reason, I adore knitted food. I love the intricacy, the attention to detail, and the near-realism of these pieces.
This is a great base pattern for a knit cupcake. If you look at some of the other photos, you'll see how easy it is to customize this cupcake. Add knit chocolate chips, sparkly yarn for sprinkles, or ribbons for decoration. Place a knit candle on top instead of the cherry. Use different colored yarn to change the "flavor" of the cupcake or customize it for a holiday.
Donuts are another versatile pattern, easy to individualize according to your taste. A pile of these would look lovely as a centerpiece, or take center stage at a child's playful tea party. Note to self: look into knitted coffee cups or tea pots as a perfect accompaniment!
What a fun birthday present this would be, paired with a vintage china plate and linen napkin! Consider making eight of these for a full cake, and present it in a real cake box. If, like me, you prefer pie, check out this knitting pattern.
These are some great food knitting patterns, whatever your sweet tooth. Don't forget to put bases inside the bottom of these items before you finish them up, using plastic container lids or cardboard cut to size. Otherwise, you'll have top-heavy projects that don't stay upright.
And just in case you thought these desserts had no utilitarian value, don't forget this is a knitting for charity website. If you find that you enjoy making these projects, you may want to knit some for a local children's hospital or preschool. Young children love to play with pretend food and these are soft and safe. So learn to knit sweet desserts and bring smiles to faces of all ages.
