Knitting Scarves for Charity

New to charity knitting? Knitting scarves is a great way to start

Knitting scarves is such an easy and rewarding way to introduce yourself to charity knitting.

Last winter, I took an armful of scarves to the local homeless shelter - I'd spent a couple of weeks knitting scarves that were suitable for women, men and children, and had several of each.

Taking a break from knitting scarves, I walked up the steps of the old brick building, hoping to find a supervisor I could give the scarves to, for distribution to the street people who came there. I noticed that I could see my breath, and I realized that it was quite cold out that very night.

As I got to the top step, I noticed several people milling around in front of the door - apparently the shelter hadn't yet opened for the evening, and folks were waiting, and trying to stay warm under the overhang. I was so glad I was knitting scarves for them!

A gaunt and pale looking woman looked up from the stoop where she was hunched over, and said, 'Are those knitted scarves?' When I nodded, unable to speak, she reached up her hand - and without saying a word, I gave her one. One by one, every other person on that landing came over to me with their hand out, and I gave each of them a scarf.

Some thanked me with a nod, others said a quiet thank-you, and that woman thanked me with tears, and by immediately wrapping that warm scarf around her neck so I could see it. By the time I got in the door to the supervisor, most of the scarves were gone - to the people who needed them the most.

I'll never forget that experience, and I'll never stop knitting scarves for folks who need them!
