Knitting Instructions and Skill Levels -- What Do They Mean?

As a knitting beginner you find a project with instructions you are dying to try. You stand there undecided -- can you do it or not? Here's the problem. Most knitting instructions give a skill level rating on the pattern but they're often confusing.

If you've been wondering what those levels mean, this information will help you understand and choose the right project that just right for your skill level.

Beginner

Projects rated "beginner" are for first-time knitters. These patterns generally use basic knit and purl stitches and require minimal shaping.

Easy

This skill level uses basic stitches and repetitive stitch patterns. Also some simple color changes along with simple shaping and finishing are included here.

Intermediate

This level gets a little bit more involved and includes a variety of stitches such as basic cables and lace, intarsia, double-pointed needles and knitting in the round techniques.

Experienced

Ahhh.... the level we all dream about achieving. This level uses advanced technique and stitches. Some of these include short rows, fair isle, more intricate intarsia, cables, lace patterns, and numerous color changes.

As you begin knitting, start out at the appropriate level. We all want to jump ahead and knit some of the beautiful patterns that are out there, but take your time. Remember, you have to crawl before you can walk. The same goes for knitting.

Start out with patterns that say "beginner" on the knitting instructions and as your confidence and skills improve, work your way up the knitting ladder!
