Add a little zip to your favorite pattern with this knitting technique

If you love stripes, try this knitting technique! By knitting in multiple colors you can add a little "zip" to one of your favorite patterns with stripes.

Does knitting in multiple colors intimidate you? No problem! Knitting stripes is an easy knitting technique that you can learn in no time. Jazzing up your old favorites with these fancy stripes will soon be a cinch.

Knitting in multiple colors

Okay. I'll admit it. The first time I saw a knitting pattern with several different colors, I ran quickly in the opposite direction. If the thought of knitting stripes into a project and using multiple colors of yarn makes you have the same reaction, don't worry. There's hope!

Knitting in multiple colors is actually easy. The first time you try it, I recommend you try knitting stripes into a pattern you are familiar with. Don't start trying to learn a new knitting technique and a new pattern at the same time -- the results may not be so great!

Working horizontal stripes is one of the easiest ways to add different colors to your knitting project just follow these simple steps:

Step #1 --

Cast on the desired number of stitches. Work the required number of rows with your first yarn color. Join a new color but do not cut off the yarn you have just finish using.

Step #2 --

Work two rows of your second stripe while leaving the first color of yarn dangling.

Step #3 --

At the beginning of the third stripe, pick up the first yarn. Twist it once with the yarn you are using.

Step #4 --

Continue working your third stripe. Twist the yarns after every second row as in step 3 even if your stripe is thicker than two rows of knitting.

Step #5 --

Continue working rows and carrying the yarn up the side of your knitting.

That's all there is to it. To make sure your work doesn't pucker while you're knitting stripes, always spread out the stitches you have worked since your last color change. Carry the yarn you're not currently using loosely on the back of your fabric.

Make sure your "carried" yarns don't get twisted and always take the same color over and the same color under when making the color changes.

Before you know it, you'll be whipping up some snazzy striped projects with multiple yarn colors. Now...don't be afraid. Get out your favorite pattern or favorite knitting charity project and try this new knitting technique.
