Tip #1 -- Think soft
Choose soft yarns to knit for baby. It's best to use washable wools and blends, but if you want to use untreated wool, be sure it has a soft hand.
Tip #2 -- Think convenience
Choose knitting patterns for babies that have generous neck openings. Babies hate having tops pulled over their heads, so a large opening makes dressing them much easier.
If you don't like the idea of a large neck opening, choose a sweater that buttons up the front or on one shoulder.
Tip #3 -- Think safety
Adding buttons to sweaters you make for babies certainly add convenience but be extra careful when adding those buttons. It's best to use buttons that have shanks instead of flat buttons. Even so, you must make sure attach the button securely.
One way to make sure the baby doesn't swallow or choke on a button is to sew the button on with dental floss. Much stronger than thread, it is rare that a baby can break dental floss.
Tip #4 - Think growth
Babies seem to grow in the blink of an eye. To try to stay ahead of the game, knit your gift one size larger than the baby needs. This way, they will have a little room to grow.
Also, remember that babies tend to grow longer first. If the recipient of the gift lives close by or if it is for one of your babies, you can simply add to the sleeve length and add length to the bottom of the sweater.
Tip #5 -- Think alternatively
When knitting for babies, whether for charity or for a friend, think outside the box. Knits for babies don't necessarily have to mean sweaters. Try blankets, caps, and booties. Babies can use all sorts of items besides baby sweaters.
