Knitting Charity Gives Handmade Hugs

Send some hugs by knitting for charity

What could be nicer than a knitting charity that gives handmade hugs? Not much and that's exactly what these kind ladies are doing. For fifteen years, these ladies have donated their time and skill to send hugs to those who need them most.

Handmade Hugs

These knitters may meet in Mobile, Alabama but they come from all around. Marianne Testen, a California transplant, was one of the first members of the group. The group that tugs at her heartstrings is the Native American Heritage Association of North Dakota.

Last year, Marianne and her knitting friends sent 52 pounds of scarves, sweaters, and hats so these Native American children would have warm clothing for the bitter North Dakota winters.

If you think Marianne from California is a long way from home, another member of the group, Zandstra is from Holland. Zandstra loves to knit baby items and knits all year long for the South Alabama Children's & Women's Hospital.

Gabi Stroud is originally from Germany and learned to knit in the first grade. She joined Handmade Hugs after having hip replacement surgery. She loves knitting for charity so much that she works on her knitting every day and even started a knitting group in her church to help the homeless.

From California, to Holland, to Germany, Mobile and all over the United States, these ladies have gathered every Tuesday for the last 15 years. During that time, there's no telling the amount of good will and love they have spread across the country and across the world.

If you live in or near Mobile, Alabama stop in and join them. They meet every Tuesday afternoon from 1pm to 3pm at Wellslee's All Strung Out yarn and craft store. The store is located at 5039 Cottage Hill Road, in Mobile, Alabama.

You can knit for charity and join this group, mail them your donations or join other knitting charities near you. If you've never tried charity knitting before, you're in for a treat. Not only does it do your heart good to help others but you make lasting friendships in the process.
