Okay...I'll admit. Being the knitting nut that I am, I thought I had heard of every knitting charity in existence. I was wrong. This wonderful group actually knits breast prostheses for breast cancer survivors. Why?
It all started with a 28-year-old woman named Chesley. Diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer during the pregnancy of her first child, she went through the usual problems after undergoing a mastectomy. Chesley soon learned that silicone prosthetic breasts are heavy, uncomfortable and cause heat rash.
Not only this, just one silicone breast prosthesis costs between $300 and $500 - impossible for women without insurance to pay. She soon discovered she could knit her very own breast prosthesis that was comfortable, inexpensive, the correct size and she had the added bonus that she could make them in a rainbow of colors.
During a checkup, she asked her doctor and nurse if they would like to see her knitted boob...they loved it and asked if she could round up some more for their other patients. The rest, as they say, is history. Many women came to the rescue and began knitting breast prostheses for breast cancer survivors.
How you can help
If you would like to knit for charity, help these women, and promote breast cancer awareness at the same time, you can get involved one of two ways. You can start a Knitting for Knockers group in your city or you can knit the knockers and donate them.
