Knitting Charities in Alabama
Love to knit? Help these knitting charities in Alabama
So we at Knitting for Charity are beginning a weekly segment called "Knitting for Charity Across America" featuring knitting charities found in each of the 50 states. So, if you live in Alabama and you're looking for knitting charities, you're in luck. Here are several groups that do charity knitting that would love to have you join them.
Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter
This knitting charity for an animal shelter and probably many more like it, would love to have squares or rectangles for cats and kittens brought to the shelter. The cats and kittens love to have these knitted items they can snuggle, paw and knead. If you would like to knit slightly larger blankets for puppies, they appreciate them too.
To donate your items, contact Judy Hill and find out what they currently need or mail your items to Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter, 3140 35th St., Tuscaloosa, AL 35401.
If you don't live close to this particular shelter and don't want to spend money on postage, check with the animal shelter in your city to see if they would like donations -- chances are, they would love them.
Newborns in Need, Central Alabama
The volunteers of Newborns in Need for Central Alabama donate their time and knitted items to help ease the suffering of babies who are unable to help themselves. If you love to knit baby items, you will love this charity knitting project. Greatly needed are hats, booties, blankets, and afghans.
The items are given, always free of charge, to families with premature and newborn sick and needy babies. The organization donates to hospitals, medical centers, crisis facilities and other places that help babies. If you would like to knit for charity and help needy babies, contact Linda Davis.
JOY Sisters UMW prayer shawl ministry
Knitting for charity isn't all about knitting baby items or chemo caps. If you would like to make something a little bit different, join the ladies in Harvest, Alabama as they knit prayer shawls.
These ladies knit prayer shawls, which they give to anyone in need of comfort, love and prayers. If you would like to begin knitting shawls to help this group, they accept shawls knit with the Lion Brand pattern, 'Tranquil Comfort Shawl.' This free knitting pattern easily completes a soft prayer shawl.
Contact Amy Shelton for further instructions as to how you can help this group. If you don't live close to Harvest, Alabama, they will be happy to accept your donations by mail at JOY Sisters Shawl Ministry, P.O. Box 297, Harvest, AL 35749.
There are many more knitting charities in Alabama, but these are good charities to get you started knitting for charity. Remember, if you don't live close to one of these charities, mail your donation or consider starting similar knitting charities in your hometown.
