Knitting Charities -- Close-knit Groups and a bunch of Knit Wits?
You never know what will happen when you join knitting charities. Check out Alabama's Knit Wits
You never know what will happen when you join knitting charities. Your hope is that you help those in need, but look a little deeper and you'll find the recipients aren't the only ones who reap rewards. That's what this group of 'Knit Wits' learned when they began knitting for charity.
A bunch of close-knit friends and self-proclaimed bunch of Knit Wits
What started years ago as a casual get-together has now become a regular part of these ladies' lives. 'The Knit Wits' as they jokingly refer to themselves started meeting five to six years ago in Decatur, Alabama. Over the years, they continue to meet weekly at a local coffee shop to work on projects.
There two main projects involve knitting and donating chemo caps to the Decatur Oncology Center. They knit approximately 75 caps per year and deliver the caps personally. Barbara Smith, the 'queen' of the group, is a cancer survivor so this project has personal meaning to her and is something she truly enjoys doing for other cancer patients.
The Knit Wit's second project is knitting sweater-and-scarf or sweater-and-cap sets to donate to the Committee on Church Cooperation to benefit those in need of warm clothing.
As important and appreciated as these donations are, the ladies of the Knit Wits know a secret -- the importance of belonging to a close-knit group. It's true. Over the years, these ladies have benefitted and warmed the hearts of many people, but they know they are the real winners.
Barbara, the 'queen' says it best:
'We invite everybody who knits or wants to learn to knit. If they don't know how, we'll show them. If they have a problem -- knitting or personal -- we'll work through it with them.'
