Knit for Charity and the District of Columbia
Spread some love in the D.C. and knit for charity
As knitters, we all have a preference about what we like to knit. This is also true when we knit for charity. If you live in or anywhere near the Washington, D.C. area, you have your choice -- you can knit for needy children or our wounded servicemen. Just take your pick of knitting charities and start knitting.
Christ Child Society
'Nothing is too much to do for a child.' I think that about sums up what this organization is all about. Founded in 1887 by Mary Virginia Merrick, the Christ Child Society charity organization has been knitting layettes for needy families ever since.
Every year the Christ Child Society provides 5,000 layettes to needy families in the D.C. area. The layettes consist of beautiful hand-knit outfits and hand-knit blankets so the mothers know that someone cares for them. The layettes also include books, pajamas, crib sheets, and other needed items.
If you're interested in providing hand-knit items for this wonderful organization, please contact Colleen Eubanks or call 202-966-9250.
Rectangle 6 x 9
This group of knitters provide hand-knit blankets to our wounded service men in the Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C. They would greatly appreciate your help by knitting 6"x9" rectangles to be joined together to make twin-size afghans.
Their objective is to provide both comfort and warmth to the men and women who risk their lives to protect and guard our great country. All you have to do to get started is pick up those knitting needles and start knitting. Using acrylic yarn, knit as many 6x9 rectangles as you would like or have time to complete.
As of December 29, 2009, this group has delivered over 3,240 handmade afghans to wounded military personnel. This represents the efforts of 1,200 volunteers that have been knitting for charities and over 160,000 rectangles. To join in and help the cause, email this knitting organization and they will be happy to give you instructions for mailing your rectangles.
Whether you like to knitting for charity to help children or like to knit afghans to help wounded servicemen, you have your choice. Carve out some time and knit for charity today.
