Knit for Charity and Help Children Around the World
Feel good about yourself when you knit for charity and help needy children on 5 continents
You don't always plan to knit for charity -- sometimes, it just happens. This was the case with Susan Caccivio. In 2003, Susan founded Knitting for Angels. She taught herself to knit while going through the process of adopting her son from Belarus and daughter from Russia.
Her children loved their 'mama blankies' so much, she realized that the many children left behind in the orphanages needed blankets too. What started with two kind-hearted knitters has expanded to 300 and is growing daily.
Knit for angels
Knitting for Angels has knitters who donate their time, love, and supplies in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, New Jersey, Kansas, Florida, Colorado, Washington, Texas, Wisconsin, New Mexico, Hawaii, and even Australia. The goal for Knitting for Angels is 'to provide children in need, including those in orphanages, hospitals, and institutions, with a handmade treasure which will provide them warmth and comfort.'
Help an angel
Knitting for Angels helps children on five continents, including the countries of Afghanistan, Belarus, China, Colombia, Guatemala, Iraq, Korea, Romania, Russia, Uganda, Rwanda, Ukraine, and the United States.
Currently, Knitting for Angels desperately needs warm knits for children. Items to knit include hats, mittens, scarves, sweaters, and blankets of any size from birth to teen. Due to the economy and unemployment rates, Knitting for Angels is completely out of knitted items and has a waiting list of children who need these knitted items to stay warm.
How to help
1. Donate unused yarn.
2. Knit items to donate using either your supplies or Knitting for Angels supplies.
3. Consider a monetary donation if you don't have any spare time to do charity knitting.
All you have to do is send an email to knittingforangels@comcast.net. They will add you to their newsletter notify you of upcoming and ongoing projects and set you up with supplies if needed. Knitting for Angels accepts any items in any size. Need some pattern ideas? Many free knitting patterns are available on the Internet.
Without knitting charities like Knitting for Angels, many children go without warm clothing. Please consider joining many other like minded knitters and knit for charity.
