Kid Knits Teaches Knitting With Compassion
With Kid Knits, we learn that you're never too young -- or too old! -- to knit for charity
I love Kid Knits. It's an awesome charity I learned about recently. What makes it so great? The fact that a young girl founded it -- and it's all about knitting! We hear so much about the negative aspects of today's youth that it's wonderful to get a reminder that most kids really want to make a difference -- and some of them take more initiative about it than adults.
The story behind kids knitting
Ellie learned how to knit on a loom with her local girl scout troop and loved it. Shortly thereafter, Ellie learned the story of the Rwandan holocaust and its survivors. Being the clever girl she is, it didn't take her long to make the jump from thought to action and put her new skill together with her concern.
Ellie knew that kids knitting would take a long time, so with her parents' help, she decided that instead of making hats to sell, they would create knitting kits with knitting instructions for people around the world. Whenever you purchase one of these knitting kits, the money goes to help victims in Rwanda. Already know how to knit? No problem -- through Kids Knit, you can also buy yarn and wool.
Ellie was only nine when she founded Kids Knit and began teaching kids how to knit and save the world at the same time. If for no other reason than her enthusiasm, she deserves your support. Fortunately, she's also working with a great cause.
How to Help
-Spread the word! Kids Knit is a fairly new charity, so they need your help to make it a success. Post links to their website, tell your friends, and encourage people to visit.
-Go shopping! Buy knitting kits for kids for Christmas and birthdays, or just because -- and maybe pick up some of your yarn, too. The yarn is definitely not discounted, but it's very high quality merino yarn, and you're paying a fair wage to Rwandan workers when you buy it.
-Visit the blog to keep up with and support Ellie and her family as they get Kid Knits moving.
-Encourage your kids to wear any knitted hats they make and tell their friends how they can learn how to knit, too -- all the while supporting a worthy cause.
I get so excited when I see kids knitting, and I get doubly excited when they knit for charity. By starting her own knitting charity, Ellie has quadruple excited me! Let's show her how generous knitters can be by supporting Kids Knit as it gets going.
