Join the American Brittany Rescue and Save an Animal

Use your knitting powers for the American Brittany Rescue and its volunteers.

The American Brittany Rescue focuses on a rarely mentioned area of animal need: abandoned purebreds! Unfortunately, many people continue to breed dogs irresponsibly. That can result in purebred dogs (in this case, the specific breed of Brittanys) who wind up in shelters, lost on the streets, or simply tossed aside.

Although many people would prefer that no one breed dogs at all until they'd emptied every shelter, it's not the Brittanys' faults they're here, and the American Brittany Rescue refuses to let their plight go unheeded.

Hey! It's a...?

So what exactly is a Brittany? It's a specific breed of dog, often confused with English and Welsh Springer Spaniels, English and Irish Setters, Cocker Spaniels, and Pointers. Originally, people bred Brittanys for hunting, and some of that behavior carries over, resulting in a cheerful, enthusiastic, and active animal.

Brittanys are charming dogs. As everyone at American Brittany Rescue knows, they make wonderful family dogs, readily bond with new owners, and are happy to participate in various shows. They are easy to train but require a lot of attention -- this isn't a farm dog! Try to lock it outside for the night and it'll probably tear a hole in your screen trying to get back in.

And I would knit for these because...?

Once someone abandons their purebred Brittany, American Brittany Rescue springs into action. In spite of their name, the charity encompasses volunteers across the United States and Canada, and they rescue many purebreds every year. While they don't handle mixed breeds, they're always willing to direct you to Petfinder or other such locations, where you can help your stray find a good home.

Obviously, one of the main ways you can help out American Brittany Rescue is through financial donations, which you can make through their website. And of course, if you'd like to adopt a Brittany of your very own, they'd love to help you find one.

But you're changing the world through knitting, right? Don't worry, I haven't forgotten. There are two ways you can help out these beautiful dogs with yarn and needles!

1. Contribute to the July charity auction!

American Brittany Rescue intends to hold an online auction in July 2008, and they'd welcome hand-made items, especially knitted or crocheted afghans.

2. Knit a special dog blanket to send home with a Brittany

Moving's a tricky business even when you're a grown-up -- imagine for an animal! Think about how much it would help if the dog had a special blanket to take to its new home, a familiar, hand-knit treasure to give him a sense of familiarity. You see where I'm going with this, of course....

Brittanys are beautiful dogs, and like all animals, they deserve a home. Visit the American Brittany Rescue website today and start thinking about how you can put your crafting prowess to work on these dogs' behalves!
