LEARN HOW TO KNIT

1. First things first, though, if you want to learn how to knit. If you haven't already done so, take yourself to your local yarn store, and pick up a few things:

- 'worsted-weight' yarn (you don't need to worry about not knowing what that is just yet - just ask any clerk to help you find it!) in your favorite color. While you learn how to knit, it also doesn't matter if the yarn is a natural fiber like wool, or an 'acrylic.' You'll eventually develop preferences!
- a set of knitting needles in size 8. Again, just ask!
- to learn how to knit, you need a 'yarn needle' -- it's usually plastic, with a big 'eye.'
- a little pair of scissors.
- a 'learn how to knit' instruction book (most of them have great diagrams and illustrations, so they're easy to follow)

2. Find a friend or neighbor who has already learned how to knit, and ask her to 'stand by' in case you need any help. Which you will. :)

DID YOU KNOW … It was not uncommon in the 19th century, and perhaps earlier, for children to be given a daily task of knitting. Some people record how they had to knit an inch on their socks before going out to play.

3. Read the learn how to knit book -- cover to cover -- before you even pick up the needles. It'll give you a 'feel' for the process, and you'll familiarize yourself with knitting jargon and terms.

4. Envision yourself, within 3 months, turning out beautiful sweaters, afghans and other wonderful hand-knitted goods. It won't even take you that long to learn how to knit, but if you use this visualization, you'll build your confidence quickly!

5. NOW pick up the needles and the yarn and the learn how to knit book, and start at the beginning. Once you've done a little 'swatch,' you'll need the yarn needle and scissors to tuck in your 'ends.'

You're about to learn how to knit - enjoy!
