How to Form a Charity Knitting Group

Start your very own charity knitting circle

Getting lonely with your charity knitting? Sure that you could do so much more if you could convince some friends to help? There's an easy solution: form a charity knitting group. With just a small bit of effort, you can create a very special knitting circle where all of the members knit with a focus.

Knitting with others keeps you focused on the task at hand. It's fun, and it provides great opportunities to learn from one another. If you've never been a member of a knitting circle, then charity knitting groups are great places to start.

Knitting for charities together

There's strength in numbers, and that goes for charity knits, too. Here are some simple steps to forming your own circle.

1. Find likeminded people. They don't all have to be knitters, but they do have to be willing to learn and interested in knitting for charities. It also helps if you have a similar focus in terms of charities. If one member of the group firmly believes in only helping local charities and one focuses only on overseas groups, you may have a problem.

2. Set a time and commit to it. Be flexible on this. Many charity knitting groups meet once a week, but some meet as infrequently as once a month or a few times a year, and some very dedicated groups meet every other day. Choose a time that suits your members.

3. Choose a place. The easiest, and least expensive, option is to circulate among members' homes. The best way to get publicity and new members is to choose a trendy coffee shop. It really depends on your group.

4. Decide on a knitting charity to start out with. There are many on this website to choose from. As a group, browse through them -- or pick five or six you like for the first group meeting and invite members to choose among them.

5. Identify your priorities. Some charity knitting groups meet only to make squares and sew them into afghans. Some choose new knitting charities every month. Some have many individual projects on the go and only meet to encourage one another. Some focus on local outreach and encouraging more people to knit for charity.

There's no wrong way to have charity knitting groups, but you have to pick the one that matches your personalities and abilities.

6. Make sure you're having fun! Any charity knitting group should involve snacks, good conversation, maybe music, and a chance to share new ideas and skills. You could even assign each group member a week when it's their responsibility to bring something fun or interesting to share. Just make sure it stays fun and doesn't turn into homework.

Knitting is fun, whether it's alone or in a group. But knitting with friends can help you stay focused and accomplish more. Form your own charity knitting group to help yourself reach new charity heights!
