Here's A Gem Among Many Fantastic Free Knitting Patterns for Winter

Getting chilly? You need some free knitting patterns

There are all kinds of free knitting patterns for winter: sweaters, scarves, and hats in abundance. Why not knit up a cozy afghan, or a pair of slippers? In a hurry? Make a headband to keep your head warm. Looking for a challenge? Try some vintage mittens.

But what if it's not you that's cold after all? What if it's your poor old house that's suffering from draftitis? What's that? In all your knitting you've never knit a thing to keep your house warm? Shame on you! It's time to get started.

Knitted Draft Blocker

Materials:

Depending on the size of the door, 1-2 skeins of a natural fiber (wool, alpaca, etc.) yarn

Circular needles

Rice, and lots of it

Decorating materials (felt or yarn scraps, googly eyes, etc.)

Instructions:

This is one of those easy, do-it-yourself free knitting patterns, so I don't have a gauge to offer you. Knit it as big or as small as you like. Just keep one thing in mind: we're going to be felting these guys, so assume they'll shrink to at least half their original size. Better to err on the side of too large in this case.

Cast on as many stitches as you think you'll need on a pair of circular knitting needles (for what it's worth, I used US size 7 needles and cast on 46 stitches). Knit in stockinette stitch until you have a tube measuring approximately six inches longer than the doorway you plan to block.

Cast off, grafting the bottom together as you would the toe of a sock. Felt the finished product in a hot washing machine until you have a warm, solid looking lump of fabric.

You wanted a free knitting pattern to warm up your cold cold house, so it's time to put this baby into action. Stuff it full of rice -- and I mean stuff it. Don't skimp out. Once it's nice and full, stitch the top of the tube shut. You'll have a long, heavy, rice-filled tube that could probably double as a weapon.

At this point you could just plop it down in front of a doorway and it would work fine, but what's the fun in that? I say get decorating! Be as creative as you like. I gave mine button eyes, big floppy felt ears, stuffed feet and a cotton batting tail -- voila! A rabbit.

With this and other free knitting patterns to keep you going, it should be a warm and cozy winter!
