Go Beyond the Sweater - Knit Craft Items

If you feel like you're stuck for new knitting ideas, think about learning how to knit crafty items!

It took me forever to figure out how to knit my first sweater. I was so proud of it, too, even though the arms hung down to my knees. It was the first non square shaped item I'd turned out.

I've come a long way since then, but I still get into a rut now and then -- knitting fifteen pairs of mittens in a row, for example, or getting stuck on afghan squares for charity. That's why I was so excited when I found all of these great ideas about how to knit fun and unusual items -- so excited that I just had to share.

Choose your next project from one of these knit crafts

1. Knitted bowls

I can just hear you asking how on earth you knit a bowl. Well, the secret lies in felting, of course -- washing the finished product in very hot water until it acquires a felt-like consistency. The good folks over at About.com have found a fun, easy pattern for a bright spring knitted bowl.

2. Costumes

I love Knitting-and.com. It's a great source for fun free patterns, and some of those are great Halloween costumes! If you've always wondered how to knit cat ears or fairy wings, check out these links:

3. Golf club covers

Given up knitting for the men in your life? Why not try a set of knitted golf club covers for Father's Day! Of course, if you golf yourself, feel free to knit a set of these easy, fun covers for your own clubs. You can get wild and creative with this basic pattern, or stick to the stripes it recommends.

4. Cell phone covers

If you have a teenager you've wished showed some interest in how to knit, introduce them to the craft through these cool, funky cell phone covers. Use some wild yarn in fun colors and you'll have them begging to learn more!

5. Vintage Knits

Once again, the good folks over at Knitting-and.com have come up with something quirky and strange: a pattern for women's underwear from 1944. As the pattern promises, you'll love wearing "this pretty set... underneath your loveliest frock when you want to be your very best."

So don't bind yourself to the sweater! Get out there and learn how to knit something fun, creative, or plain old strange today.
