Fun Things to Do With Finger Knitting
If you've never tried finger knitting, here are some great projects to start!
If you're looking to involve children in knitting for charity, why not give finger knitting a try? It's a fun, easy way to involve beginners of all ages, and an interesting way to put your knitting skills to use in a new way.
Why Finger Knit?
Finger knitting is a way to knit without needles. It's sort of a combination of crochet and knit, and it's best for simple projects like headbands and belts. These are great items for kids to make and donate to various charitable organizations. You could also use finger knitting to make those infamous blanket squares needed for so many charitable organizations.
How to Do It
These instructions assume you're right-handed. If you're left-handed, reverse all instructions.
Begin by tying the yarn loosely around your left index finger. Weave the yarn in and out of your fingers (behind your middle finger, in front of your ring finger, and around your pinkie). Then repeat the process, weaving behind your ring finger, in front of your middle finger, and around your index finger. You should now have two strands of yarn on each finger with the ball of yarn hanging down the back of your hand.
At this point, finger knitting should begin to sound familiar: you're going to lift the bottom loop on each finger over the top loop and right off your finger. That will leave a single loop on each finger.
Repeat this process, weaving yarn around your fingers to have two strands and then lifting the bottom over the top. That's all there is to it: finger knitting at its finest!
Once you have a strand that's as long as you want it, stop weaving with one strand on each finger. It's time to cast of!
Lift the loop off your pinkie finger and place it on your ring finger. Then take the bottom loop and lift it over the top loop. One loop remains on your ring finger; put it on your middle finger. Again, lift the bottom loop off and move the remaining loop to your index finger. One more time, lift the bottom loop off, leaving yourself with one last loop. Cut a tail and pull it through the loop, finishing your finger knitting just as you would your regular knitting.
And with that, you've completed a knitted strand without using a single needle! Bind it all together and you've finished your first project with finger knitting.
