Fun Knitting Tools

Fun necessary and some not so necessary knitting tools to add to your knitting stash.

Don't you just love to buy fun knitting tools? I know I do. Yes, some of them are necessary -- you really do need them -- and some are not so necessary, but we like them anyway.

I bet if you check out your knitting stash you will find one or two of these tools. Let me tell you about some of my favorites.

Fun Knitting Tools

Row Counters

There are quite a few different styles of row counters. The one I use threads on to my knitting needle and keeps count of the rows that I have knitted. This is especially useful when I'm working on a project where several rows are required for repeating patterns.

Stitch Holders

Now, as far as I'm concerned, this is a necessary knitting tool. Stitch holders do exactly what their name says -- they hold your stitches that you need to set aside while working on another part of your project. So if you're working on a project with a neckband, pocket band or shoulder seams, this tool will hold them for you while you're working.

Point Protectors

Not what it sounds like. Yes, they fit over the points of your knitting needles but when I first saw them, I thought it was to keep from poking people or to be safe around children. Hmmm ... then, I learned. You put these little babies over the points of your knitting needles when you're not knitting and it holds your stitches on. No more slipped stitches. Fantastic!

Yarn Bobbins

Have you knitted a project lately that uses several different colors of yarn? I have and it became a tangled mess. Yarn bobbins are good for managing your yarns when you're using several at the same time. Let me tell you -- these are necessary when you get into some of the more difficult projects that are multi-colored.

Needle Gauge

I personally like having a needle gauge. Some of the knitting needles that I have are double pointed and don't have the size marked on them. With my handy dandy gauge, I can quickly check to see what size my needle is.

The gauge that I have also has a conversion chart. If the pattern I'm working with uses a different sizing system, I can check that I have the right size needle. Really, you don't want to use the wrong size needle. Been there. Done that.

Stitch Row Markers

Have you tried knitting in the round yet? Well, when you do you're going to need stitch row markers. These come in all different shapes and sizes. Of course, you could just use a different color yarn to mark your rows. Personally, I like these -- one more fun gadget for me to have in my stash!

Okay, so now that I look at my list...you know what? I don't feel so bad. These may be fun tools to have, but I'm completely convinced they are completely necessary and in addition to your standard knitting supplies, I think every self-respecting knitter should have these fun knitting tools too!
