Free Sock Knitting Patterns

Enjoy these sock knitting patterns -- perfect for newbies and pros alike

Once you learn how to knit socks, you're going to be ready for sock knitting patterns to add to your repertoire. You might not think there's much to it -- after all, aren't all sock knitting patterns essentially the same? Well, not necessarily -- it all lies in how you look at it. And sometimes you can find patterns where you least expect them.

1. Pre-patterned yarn

There are plenty of sock yarns out there with the pattern built right in. The most complex and well-known sock knitting patterns occur in Ashford yarns, but there are many other multicolored and funky yarns out there that create amazing and beautiful patterns with just a basic stockinette stitch.

2. Andromeda socks

This batch of sock knitting patterns is perfect for teen girls, moms who want to have a little fun, and the funky princess in all of us. The bead work on top adds a killer edge to a very cute, very feminine pair of socks.

3. Legwarmer socks

Remember legwarmers? Those of us who lived through the 80s might never want to see them again. But this knitted set of legwarmers with socks attached is enough to make you rethink that position. Besides, everything old is new again -- my daughter assures me it's okay to wear legwarmers these days.

4. Clog socks

Spring is coming, and with it backless shoes, even if it's not quite warm enough to go barefoot. These are perfect sock knitting patterns for that in between time -- the heels are so cute that you'll want to wear shoes without backs just to show them off.

5. Slipper socks

No list of sock knitting patterns would be complete without a mention of slipper socks, everyone's favorite cozy wear. These are extra fun because they use novelty yarn to create an interesting edge.

6. Laundry socks

These are called laundry socks because each pair has a matching stripe, letting you quickly and easily grab matches out of the wash. Since this free knitting pattern is for little baby/toddler socks, they'll get a lot of machine washing, too!

These are only a few of the fun and easy sock knitting patterns available online, but they're a great place to start -- and you'll have as much fun making them as you'll have wearing them.
