Free Knitting Patterns Teach You How to Knit Fun and Unusual Items

Learn how to knit all sorts of novelty items with these free knitting patterns

I'm always looking for instructions on how to knit something out of the ordinary. When you knit as much as I do, you get bored with afghans and sweaters, and you start to experiment. In the past I've knit nightcaps (no one wanted to wear them), bath towels (distinct failure), and underwear (shouldn't have used real wool). Needless to say, none of these were resounding successes.

But then I found these great instructions on how to knit novelty items people actually enjoy. Better still, these free knitting patterns whip up quickly, take very little yarn, are inexpensive, make fantastic personal gifts, and are a lot of fun. What more could you ask for? I loved finding these free knitting patterns with "smiley" faces on them. They made me... well... smile!

1. Knitted Molecule

I used this as a going-away present for a friend's daughter who was off to study physics, and she loved it. It's also great for hardcore knitters since it's actually an acrylonitrile molecule (the kind used to create acrylic fibers). Besides, don't you want to be able to tell people you know how to knit a molecule?

2. College Sweater Brooch

Whether it's a college reunion or your daughter's baseball team, everyone will love these mini jerseys. You can personalize them as much as you like with names and numbers as long as you know how to do intarsia or Fair Isle knitting. You can use hot glue, a sewn-on brooch backing, or even just a safety pin to finish the project.

3. Key Sweater

You've knit sweaters for yourself, your kids, even your dog. Have you ever stopped to consider that your poor little keys might be cold, too?

Actually, this is a very useful little pattern. Once you know how to knit these key sweaters, they keep your keys from scratching your wallet, cell phone, and anything else that might be kicking around your purse. Plus they're awfully cute, make great gifts, and are definitely a conversation piece.

These are just three of the fun, interesting novelty items you can knit. Once you get a better idea of how to knit unique treats, why not try coming up with some patterns of your own -- and don't forget to pass them on to me!
