Free Knitting Patterns Go To The Dogs

The very best free knitting patterns to bundle up your darling dogs.

It's not that hard to find free knitting patterns in the days of the almighty Internet, but have you ever tried hunting for patterns for dog sweaters? Have you ever even considered knitting a sweater for your dog? Here you are making mittens and hats for your kids, friends, spouses, even complete strangers, and Fido is absolutely knit-free.

Okay, I admit: I dress my dog. Not in little booties or ball caps, but I do like to knit him up a sweater now and then. If nothing else it keeps him warm in the deep of winter. So if you're a person like me and just can't bear to see your four-legged companion undressed, here are my top five canine related free knitting patterns for your enjoyment.

5. Cable Knit Doggie Sweater

This oh-so-cute cable knit sweater is basically a tube with leg holes. The site also has tips on how to measure your dog and create the perfect custom fit. If only someone took as much care making clothes for me!

4. Buster

This one's a bit more complicated, but it has a jaunty collar with a button (and a really cute model), so we can let that go. It's not exactly a difficult knit, so let's put it in the pile of intermediate free knitting patterns and give it a try if you're looking for a small challenge.

3. The Original Custom Fit Dog Sweater

Esther Smith Bozak designed this picture-perfect dog sweater after years of searching for the perfect pattern, and now it's online for you to share.

But I've saved the best two for last. My favorite sites for free knitting patterns (at least where dogs are concerned)...

2. Custom Generated Sweater

I love websites that do this: you can enter your measurements and the site will generate a special, custom fit pattern to match. Way to take the guesswork out of the job!

1. Knitting Pattern Central's Pet Links

Okay, this isn't A free knitting pattern, it's a PILE of free knitting patterns. And it's not limited to sweaters, either: you can make a mumu for your cat, an evening gown for your dog (although even I might draw a line at that one), or even a matching collar and leash. Even if you don't make anything, you'll have fun browsing.

So tackle these free knitting patterns and get Fido dressed before next winter!
