Four Unusual Knitting Yarns - and What They're Good For
Unique knitting yarns for charity projects
Knitting yarns come in every imaginable size, shape, texture and color. There are the man-made knitting yarns (including the acrylics), and the natural knitting yarns - wool, alpaca, llama and silks, for example. And then, of course, there are all kinds of 'blends' of any of these knitting yarns!
UNIQUE KNITTING YARNS
1. The most unusual knitting yarns right now are the ones called 'novelty yarns.' By definition, novelty yarn actually contains multiple yarns that may be a 'blend' of a man-made fiber (acrylic) and cotton or a virgin wool, for example.
It is always very 'textured,' which makes it very unique and different from traditional wools and yarns. And … there is no one 'novelty yarn,' there are literally hundreds, which means literally hundreds of unique project possibilities.
2. Knitting yarns that are blends of various other kinds of yarn are wonderful to knit charity projects with - for example, wool blends make inexpensive warm goods like winter hats and slippers.
3. Cotton blends - from 'chemo caps' to facecloths, cotton blended knitting yarns are very versatile.
4. One of the most unusual knitting yarns I've seen for a long time is called 'light pipe' yarn - do a Google search for it! One seller describes it as a "translucent tube of nylon with a fine, printed yarn running through it; once in awhile the fine yarn comes out to knit a little flag and then goes back into the tube." 'Light pipe' is a nickname for fiber optics, and the tube is reminiscent of a fiber optics tube. How fun does THAT sound?
