Fixing Your Knitting Mistakes Part I
Easy solutions for common knitting mistakes
Knitting mistakes are frustrating. Knitting is fun...until you make a mistake and you have to go back and figure out how to fix it. Don't worry. Follow these simple instructions, and fix just about any mistake you make while knitting.
1. Untwist a knit stitch
A twisted stitch happens when you pick up a dropped stitch and place it back on your needle the wrong way. It can also happen when you have incorrectly wrapped the yarn on the previous row. Here's how to fix this knitting mistake.
-- You can tell if a stitch is twisted because the front of the stitch sits further to the left than the back of the stitch.
-- Knit up to the stitch and then take the tip of your right needle from left the right through the back of the loop.
-- Wrap the yarn from back to front between the needles and complete the stitch.
2. Untwist a purl stitch
You can tell if a purl stitch is twisted because the front of the stitch will sit further to the left than the back of the stitch. Here's how to fix it.
-- Purl up to the stitch. Take the tip of your right needle from right to left through the back of the loop.
-- Wrap the yarn from right the left around the tip of your right needle and complete the purl stitch.
3. Picking up a dropped stitch from the previous row
When you've noticed that you dropped a stitch on the last row you knit, here's how you fix it.
-- Stitch to the place of the dropped stitch. Make sure the loose section of yarn is behind the loop of the dropped stitch.
-- Take your right needle from front to back through the loop of the dropped stitch and then take it under the loose section of yarn.
-- Take the tip of your left needle from left to right through the dropped stitch on your right needle.
-- Left the stitch back over the loose section of yarn and off your right needle.
-- Take the tip of your left needle from right to left through the front of the stitch on your right needle.
-- Draw back your right needle, slipping the stitch off your right needle and leaving it on your left needle.
-- Knit the picked up stitch and continue working across the row.
These are three easy fixes to three of the most common mistakes made by knitters. In part two of this series, we'll cover several more knitting mistakes and how to fix them.
