Finish Ends of Yarn Professionally with These Finishing Techniques
Get a professional look with these finishing techniques
Working hard on knitting projects means you should top them off with a professional look -- not a homemade look. With these finishing techniques, getting that smooth and perfect look is easy to do.
1. Finishing the end of yarn within a seam
Whether you used your yarn to sew up the seam or not, this is the best method of finishing a tail of yarn. Before you begin, keep in mind that knitting is stretchier across its width than down the length. Therefore, weave in yarn ends vertically. This way they are less likely to pop through to the front. If possible, finish tails of yarn within a seam rather than within the knitting itself.
Here's how to do it.
-- Thread the tail of yarn into a tapestry needle. Take the needle in and out of the edge stitches for about 1 1/2 inches.
-- Pull the yarn through. Going in the opposite direction, take the needle in and out of the edge stitches for a distance slightly less than 1 1/2 inches.
-- Pull the yarn through and trim an extra that is left over.
2. Finishing the end of yarn within the knitting
Sometimes, especially when knitting with different colors of yarn, you have no choice but to finish a tail of yarn within the knitting itself. It's just as easy as finishing within a seam, just slightly different.
Here's how to do it.
-- Thread the tail of yarn into a tapestry needle. On the back of the fabric, take the needle through the stitch next to the tail of yarn.
-- Pull the yarn through. Going vertically, take the needle in and out of the back of the stitches for approximately 1 1/2 inches. Do not take the needle through to the front of the fabric.
-- Pull the yarn through. Repeat step 2 in the opposite direction for a distance slightly less than 1 1/2 inches.
-- Pull the extra yarn through and trim any extra that you have.
This finishing technique will give your knitting projects a professional look without any loose yarn tails hanging from your project.
