Finding a Great Knitting Blog

A good knitting blog provides free patterns, a sense of community, and a place to waste time online

Looking for a great knitting blog? If not, why not? You might laugh, but following knitting blogs is actually a great way to keep in touch with the knitting community. Unlike some blogs, where people go on and on about nothing of interest, with a knit blog you know you'll be reading about something that matters. And it's always fun to have a place to waste time online!

Benefits of knitting blogs

Why am I such a big fan of knit blogs? Well, aside from the fact that I run my own, there are a number of reasons:

-- If there aren't a lot of knitters in your community, a blog is a great place to get to know people around the world. The comments section often leads to great tips and conversations.

-- You'll get new ideas for projects and tips on different knitting styles.

-- You'll find lots of free, original patterns.

With all of that going for knitting blogs, it surprises me that they're not more popular -- and they're pretty well known to begin with.

Finding the perfect knitting blog

There are literally thousands of knitting blogs out there, so you'll have to do some exploration to find the one you like best. Think about what type of knitter you are, and what you want from this blog. Are you a traditionalist who wants patterns for afghans Granny would have made, or are you looking for something young and edgy you can wear for a night out?

Regardless, here are a few of my favourite knit blogs:

1. Green Apples

This site for knitters covers knitting, sewing, and quilting, so if you're a jack of all trades crafter, you'll call it home.

2. The Knitting Bug

This knitting site showcases very beautiful and fairly traditional designs.

3. Chic Knits

The opposite of The Knitting Bug -- modern and trendy knitting patterns, with a bit of a flair for the dramatic.

4. Vintage Knitting

This knitting blog hasn't updated in a long time, but the archives are well worth exploring if you're interested in real old-fashioned projects.

And I can hardly forget a plug for my own blog -- but since you're already here, I'll just invite you to explore the free knitting patterns and great knitting tips scattered all over the site!

Remember, a knitting blog is the perfect way to keep up with other crafters and score yourself some free patterns besides.
