If you live in New Jersey and love to knit shawls, Wrapped in Love is a great program to knit for
One of the hardest things anyone who has lost a loved one will have to do is make a decision about organ and tissue donation. Oftentimes these families are already dealing with a tragic loss, and now they must make a difficult decision at an emotional time.
I received a Facebook message from a woman involved in a donation program called the NJ (New Jersey) Sharing Network who, I think, understands this struggle all too well. She wrote:
My name is Jillian Padilla, and I run the Wrapped in Love program for NJ Sharing Network. I’m looking to expand the program and get more people who knit and crochet involved. The program provides handmade shawls for families who have said yes to organ and tissue donation.”
I think this is a beautiful idea! I knew immediately that I wanted to feature this program, and I asked Jillian for more information. The following is what she gave me.
About Wrapped in Love and the NJ Sharing Network
NJ Sharing Network is a non-profit, federally designated organ procurement organization responsible for the recovery of organs and tissue for the nearly 5,000 New Jersey residents currently awaiting transplantation. It is part of the national recovery system, which is in place for the more than 122,000 people on waiting lists. The Foundation raises funds in order to support donor families, conduct research and educate about organ and tissue donation and transplantation.
An integral part of NJ Sharing Network’s mission is to provide care during and after a donor family’s experience. The organization is looking for ambassadors to knit or crochet beautiful shawls for families of organ and tissue donors. Through the Wrapped in Love program, donor families are honored with handmade shawls that are tangible expressions of comfort and compassion. In joining this program, volunteers are supporting and honoring families whose loved one generously gave the gift of life.
How You Can Help
Jillian said it all! If you’d like to help, consider knitting shawls. Need patterns? Take a look at past Knitting for Charity articles containing collections of free shawl knitting patterns.
