Easy Instructions for Lengthening Knitted Garments

Fixing those "too small" knitted garments

Whether that newly finished knitted garment doesn't fit or you grew out of your favorite sweater, the solution is lengthening it. This sounds like a daunting task to many knitters, but it's not. Here's how to lengthen those favorite sweaters.

Lengthening knitted garments

Whatever the cause -- wrong knitting gauge, wrongly sized pattern, shrinkage during laundering, or...even too many late night snacks, the solution to your problem is simply lengthening a knitted garment.

Do this with just a few simple steps. It's a lot easier than you think. So before you give away your latest knitting project or your beloved favorite sweater, give this a try.

Instructions

1. Take two small knitting needles and pick up the fronts of the stitches above and below where you need to lengthen the garment. In other words, if the sleeves of your sweater are two short, insert two needles just above the cuff and at a position on the arm where lengthening will blend in.

There needs to be at least two rows of knitting between the needles.

2. Cut across the knitting that's between the two needles.

3. Remove the yarn from the cut edges all the way to each knitting needle.

4. Knit across the top of the bottom piece using the same size needles as the garment works knit with.

5. Keep working rows until you have added the required amount of length to the garment.

6. Join the two pieces of knitting together by grafting.

Once you have tried lengthening knitted garments, you'll wonder why you never tried it before. This is so simple, any knitter can do it. So fix up your stuff, whether for yourself, gifts or donations to your favorite knitting charity!
