Discount Yarn is Great for Charity Knitting

3 places to look for discount yarn

Discount yarn bargains are pretty important for most people who knit for charity, because many of us couldn't afford the hobby, otherwise. I know that there's no way I could knit the amount of things that I do if it wasn't for being able to find discount yarn bargains.

Besides, most of the recipients of charity knitting goods really don't care how 'fancy' or expensive the wool is - they just want to know if it will keep them warm, and discount yarn will do that just as well as pricey yarn.

LOOKING FOR DISCOUNT YARNS

The first place I always look for discount yarn is at thrift stores. Let's face it, lots of knitters finish projects, and still have yarn left over, so they donate it - still new, still with the wrappers on, and still perfectly knittable (is that a word, do you think? If it isn't, it should be )! I've often picked up discount yarn in thrift stores for as little as one-tenth the price of new yarn.

The next place to check for discount yarn is at your local yarn store(s). Every yarn store seems to have a discount bin, or at least regular sales events - especially if it's at the end of a season. (And, you never know - if you mention that you're knitting for charity, the store might discount the yarn, anyway).

The last place I look for discount yarn is at garage sales. Again, lots of times I've found complete new skeins of amazing yarns that I might not otherwise be able to afford, just by rummaging at garage sales. But let me tell you another discount yarn story from garage sales …

I've started looking for hand-knit or machine-knit sweaters at garage sales, which often go for the bargain price of a dollar. Lo and behold, you can UNRAVEL knitted sweaters, and re-knit them - using fantastic discount yarn like you've never imagined!
