Create Miles of Smiles when You Knit for Charity
Want to make people smile? Knit for charity
Want to make some deserving kids smile? If you do, then knit for charity and see miles of smiles. The state of Washington is hosting the 2011 Special Olympics. They are expecting 2500 Olympians and Vanessa Hailey wants to give each and every one a hand-knit scarf. If you would like to help and make some smiles, here's how.
Create some smiles!
Isn't it great to make people smile? I think so, especially when the recipients are so deserving. Such is the case with this charity started by Vanessa of Dry Creek, Washington. The mission of the charity called 'Miles of Smiles' is hand-knitting scarves for all of the special Olympians.
Vanessa cleverly came up with this name after thinking about how many skeins of yarn it takes to make a mile. Are you wondering what the answer is? How about five? In one skein of Red Heart Super Saver Yarn, there are 364 yards. Since there are 1760 yards in a mile, it takes five skeins of yarn to make a mile.
But to dedicated charity knitters like you, five skeins are nothing! If you take five skeins and knit your little heart out making scarves for these special Olympians, just think of the smiles you'll make!
Free knitting patterns
If you just dying to jump in and help this great charity, you'll love all the free charity knitting patterns on Vanessa's site. My personal favorite is the Peppermint Swirl Scarf donated by a generous lady named Suzie. I don't know of any child who wouldn't absolutely love this scarf.
Check out all the free patterns and start knitting for these kids. The Special Olympics will be here before we know it and there are a lot of kids waiting for their very own scarf.
Feel free to use any pattern you want, but please make the scarves using Red Heart Super Saver Cherry Red and White. Make the scarf approximately 5" x 55" using your own pattern or one of the knitted scarf patterns on the Miles of Smiles website
After completing your scarf, mail it to:
