Companion Animal Network: Reaching out to Animals in Need
Attention knitters and dog lovers: Companion Animal Network needs you!
If you visit the Companion Animal Network site, you won't find a lot of information about knitting. That's because this charity's primary focus doesn't have anything to do with crafts! Instead, they focus on collecting abandoned and homeless dogs and puppies, giving them the medical treatment they need, and providing a foster home while they search for a family who wants to welcome a furry bundle of love.
You Can Put Your Knitting Skills to Work for Puppies in Need!
Companion Animal Network always needs pet items -- blankets; puppy ponchos, booties, and sweaters; toys; etc. They also welcome craft items -- scarves, afghans, and whatever else you enjoy making -- which they sell to help cover the cost of providing for their animals.
What Makes CAN Special?
On the surface, Companion Animal Network is a small charity, servicing only about thirty dogs and puppies at a time. That might not seem like much, but you have to keep in mind everything CAN's volunteers do for these animals, including:
-providing foster homes
-microchipping
-spaying and neutering
-full medical checkups
In addition, Companion Animal Network isn't simply looking to get rid of these dogs as fast as they can (like, for instance, your local dog pound). They refuse to let anyone adopt one of their precious puppies until they've met the potential family, introduced them to the dog, and ascertained that it will be a successful match on both sides. When CAN lets a dog go for adoption, they're looking to make a lifelong match, not see the dog returned in six months' time! In fact, they won't let any dog go until the future family provides at least two references.
Volunteer
Companion Animal Network is a strictly volunteer organization. The fee they charge for arranging adoptions helps to cover the medical and boarding costs of the foster dogs, and of course, any financial donation helps them immensely. The thing they most need, though, is volunteers. If you happen to live in or near Dallas, Texas, and you're able to temporarily care for a foster dog, CAN would love to hear from you!
