Comfort Children in Need with These Knitting Charities

Today is "Make a Difference" Monday

Knitting charities provide necessities to people who have nothing. One of the knitted items deemed a "necessity" is a security blanket. I am inclined to agree.

As children, some of us had a special doll, others a favorite stuffed animal, but most of us had security blankets. My blanket and I were inseparable. It was my family when they were away, my favorite playmate, and my suit of armor when I was afraid.

Here are two knitting charities that, with our help, can make sure no child will be left blanket-less:

Project Linus - Love, Comfort, and Security for Children in Need.

Project Linus is a non-profit organization that encourages crafters to knit blankets for children and babies who are critically ill, or otherwise, 'in need of a hug.'

The Binky Patrol

The goal of Binky Patrol is to give every needy child their own security blanket -- no matter who they are, or what they're going through. Break out those needles, folks, it's time to knit a Binky or two.

This last charity is not for children but still involves blankets. In addition, for any newbie knitter who wants to try knitting a blanket for charity but needs a little more practice, this charity is for you.

Hugs for Homeless Animals Gives Critters Knitted Love, Too

At Hugs for Homeless Animals, knitted Snuggles make life a little easier for the residents of animal shelters.

Children are very precious and already, grow up too fast. A hand knitted security blanket is a necessity for every child, because all children deserve to feel comfortable, safe, and warm.

Did you know?

The lightest and thinnest weight of yarn, often used for newborn layettes, fancy sweaters or socks, is known as "baby" weight or fingering yarn.

Fingering yarn is very light and delicate and requires a good deal of patience, excellent eyesight, and a very adept hand. It is often knitted on very thin needles and used for lacy, intricate patterns. It's not a yarn for a beginning knitter, and some knitters never attempt using it. Garments and household linens created with fingering yarn (especially newborn layettes) are destined to become family heirlooms!
