Charity Knitting -- Warm Hearts with Heartwarming Gifts
Give heartwarming housewarming gifts with charity knitting
Gracious Parcels -- isn't that a lovely name for a charity knitting idea? I think so. And not only is the name lovely, this website, the owner, her charity and her patterns are all lovely also. Let me tell you about this lovely lady and her idea to help others.
Gracious Parcels
Once upon a time, there was a lady who lived in L.A. She met a man online, married him and is living happily ever after on a farm in upstate western New York. A change of location and lifestyle to be sure.
It happens that the lady's wonderful husband started a Habitat for Humanity chapter to help those who needed a hand up, not a hand out. If you're not familiar with Habitat, they help those in need become first-time homeowners.
So, what do you do when someone gets a new home? You give them a housewarming gift. This lady thought it would be a kind gesture to give all Habitat homeowners a hand-knit afghan the day they moved into their new Habitat home. And that's just what she did.
She knit for charity, enlisted the help of others and started giving every Habitat owner a beautiful afghan as a housewarming gift. She named her knitting charity "Gracious Parcels".
She chose the name Gracious Parcels because she would receive knit squares as 'parcels' by mail. She chose 'gracious' because it represents the humble and giving gratitude of the volunteers.
I don't know if Lovely Lady is still running Gracious Parcels, but her idea is priceless. If you love to knit for charity, isn't this a perfect idea for your area? All you have to do is find your local Habitat for Humanity chapter by visiting Habitat for Humanity and enter your zip code.
You'll get the phone number and contact information for your local chapter. Ask them if they are interested in receiving hand-knit afghans to give as housewarming gifts for their new Habitat for Humanity homeowners. Then, gather a few friends and fellow knitters and begin making afghans for Habitat owners in your area.
In the mean time, visit Lovely Lady's website and you'll find instructions for making the Gracious Parcel squares. Not only that, but you'll be able to see the wonderful photography on her website and check out her beautiful and original patterns.
Visiting her site is a pleasure and you'll want to visit it often just for pure pleasure and inspiration. But don't browse too long. Get busy with your own charity knitting and warm the hearts of Habitat owners with your heartwarming gifts.
