Can You Knit a Square Just One Square?

Not only do I love knitting -- I love knitting charities. Knitting projects to use in my home is good. Knitting gifts for loved ones is better, but knowing my knitting is going to help others, especially children, is the absolute best! If you feel the same way, here's how you can help.

Knit a Square

Whether you're an experienced knitter who can whip out projects left and right or just a beginning knitter, here's a way you can touch hundreds and thousands of of children's lives. Knit-a-Square.com is a new site that is devoted to helping orphaned children in South Africa.

There are an estimated 1.4 million orphaned children in South Africa. These children are orphaned due to the dreaded AIDS/HIV virus or actually suffer from AIDS themselves. These children need love, shelter, food, education, and warmth. Many children's charities in the area focus on providing these children with the love, shelter, food, and education. Knit-a-Square.com is taking care of the warmth.

Sandy, who started Knit-a-Square came up with the idea to use her spare yarn and knit squares that can be sewn into blankets to keep these children warm. Through this website, you can get instructions to knit or crochet 8 x 8 squares and mail them to the Soweto Comfort Club.

The Soweto Comfort Club helps the local churches and thousands of children. Women in the Comfort Club will sew the squares together into blankets and give them to the children. You can go to Knit-a-Square to see pictures of squares, packages of mailed squares, and children who have received these blankets.

While everyone would like to help these children, sometimes the thought of knitting an entire blanket can seem overwhelming but just knitting one square is something everyone can do.

As I said, I love knitting charities and this is a great one. Make a commitment to knit a square and day to help keep these children warm. You can do it!
