Broke and Out of Yarn? Learn to Knit for Free
Learn to knit without spending a dime
Just because you're out of money doesn't mean an end to knitting. I know how you feel. At different times in my knitting adventure, I've actually used up all of my knitting stash only to be unpleasantly surprised to find I also didn't have any extra money for more yarn and patterns.
What's a knitter to do? Simple. Do what I did. Learn to knit without spending a dime by following these quick and easy tips.
Cost-free knitting
Can you say, 'free knitting patterns'? Sure you can and if you're a regular visitor to our site, you know that Knitting for Charity has loads of free knitting patterns for you to choose from. From baby patterns, to scarves, hats, mittens, afghans, and free charity knitting patterns, you surely find something that sparks your interest.
Browse around and see what we have to offer. Really, between the Knitting for Charity website and the Internet, there's no reason to ever pay for a knitting pattern ever again.
Now...you've got the free patterns, you already have your needles and other standard knitting tools; all you need now is the yarn. So where do you just happen to find free yarn? Your two best resources for yarn are your home and thrift shops.
Become a thrift shop regular. Get to know the workers there and be honest with them. Just come right out and tell them you are a knitting addict with an uncontrollable problem. They will understand and when they do, ask them to give you a call anytime someone makes a donation of bulk yarn.
I know. I know. What person in their right mind would get rid of perfectly good yarn? Difficult to understand, but it happens.
If you don't get any calls about yarn donations, you still need to go to thrift shops regularly. Why? Because you can harvest donated sweaters. Most thrift shops have special days where $1.00 buys everything you can stuff in one bag. So, you just happen to stuff your bag with every sweater you can get your hands on.
Once you get a good stash of used sweaters, first wash them and then begin to harvest the yarn. Do this by unstitching around the seams. Then, look for the place in the sweater where the knitting was cast off. When you find it, just unravel the sweater.
Do the same thing at home. Go through your closets and drawers. Pull out those sweaters the kids outgrow or no one wears anymore and harvest the yarn.
Before you know it, you have a great collection of interesting yarns. You might not be able to make a king-size afghan, but you can gather enough yarn to make baby sweaters, baby or toddler size blankets, caps, scarves, mittens, and socks.
Learning to knit is a valuable skill. Learning to knit for free is even more valuable. Once you get used to doing this, learn to knit scarves, mittens, caps and more that your friends enjoy or donate to your favorite knitting charity.
Learning to knit for free doesn't only feed your knitting cravings, but is a great way to be able to donate to those in need without it ever costing you a dime.
