Bring Joy to Mariners at Christmas with This Knitting Charity

Join this knitting charity in sending Christmas cheer to hardworking mariners

Bring love, comfort, and joy to lonely mariners at Christmas time with this knitting charity. Not everyone has the luxury of being home with family and friends during the holidays. Some hard-working souls must keep working so the rest of us can enjoy our everyday comforts.

That's what these mariners do. Depending on their shifts, they could be on the river or in deep-sea during the holidays. Send them some love and cheer with your knitting charity projects.

Knitting charity for mariners

It is common for mariners to work thirty to forty day shifts. This is required to keep supplies coming and keep our country operating smoothly. Sitting comfortably at home during cold winter months, it's easy for the rest of us to forget this.

This is where the Seamen's Church Institute comes in. This organization is 175 years old and has been meeting the needs of these hardworking men by providing them with different services. One such service is Christmas-at-Sea. If you love knitting hats for charity, or many other items for that matter, you can help and show your appreciation to these men.

What can you knit? Christmas-at-Sea takes donations of:

-- Scarves
-- Knit Helmets
-- Slippers
-- Socks
-- Watch caps
-- Vests

The Seamen's Church Institute also has patterns for you to choose from. Select from any of the free knitting patterns for charity that are available on the site. Here are some of their guidelines for knitting gifts:

-- Use machine-washable yarn
-- Use 4-ply for all of the patterns except socks (use 3-ply)
-- Most mariners are men -- choose colors that men like
-- Don't mix yarns within the garment

Send finished garments to:

Christmas-at-Sea
241 Water Street
New York, NY 10038

Include your name and address so they can let you know they received your donation.

Gift packing begins right after Labor Day and continues up until Christmas. The Seamen's Church Institute accepts gifts year round, but it's most helpful for them to receive the donations during the fall.

If you enjoy doing good deeds by knitting for charity, consider this worthy cause. Keep these men warm and warm their hearts at Christmas time with this knitting charity.
